Aryabhata (476–550 CE) was the first in the line of great mathematician-
astronomers from the classical age of Indian Mathematics and Astronomy.
He was born in 476 A.D in India. His most famous works are the
Aryabhatiya and the Arya-siddhanta.
His work, Aryabhatiya, a collection of written material on Mathematics
and Astronomy, was extensively referred to in the Indian mathematical
literature and has survived to modern times. The mathematical part of the Aryabhatiya covers
arithmetic, algebra, plane and spherical trigonometry. It also contains continued fractions,
quadratic equations, etc.

Aryabhata also gave the formula: (a + b) = a + b + 2ab
Aryabhata made several important discoveries in Astronomy. For example, his estimate of the
earth’s circumference was more accurate than any achieved in ancient Greece. He was also the
first person to say that the earth is spherical in shape and it revolves around the sun.
