Step 2: Subtract the remaining tens. Step 3: Subtract the remaining hundreds.

                                            9 – 5 = 4 9 – 2 = 7

                                                                  4 6 7 4 6

Step 4: Subtract the remaining thousands.

                                              As 8 > 6, it cannot be subtracted. TTh Th H T O
                                                                                                     16 9 9
Borrow 1 from the ten thousands
                                                                                               7 6 10 10 12
                                            column and change 8 ten thousands to 8 7 0 0 2
                                            7 ten thousands. Add the borrowed 1 – 4 8 2 5 6
                                            ten thousand to 6 thousands.
                                                                                                     8 7 4 6
Now we have 16 at the ten thousands
place which is bigger than 8. Thus,
                                            subtract 8 from 16. 16 – 8 = 8.

Step 5: Subtract the remaining ten thousands. TTh Th H T O

                                            7 – 4 = 3 16 9 9
                                                                                               7 6 10 10 12
                                              So, 87,002 – 48,256 = 38,746. It is written 8 7 0 0 2
                                            as thirty-eight thousand seven hundred – 4 8 2 5 6
                                            forty-six.
                                                                                               3 8 7 4 6

                    Example 11: Subtract 1,57,936 from 4,60,082.

                    Solution: L TTh Th H T O
                                                   9
                                             5 10 10 7 12
                                       4 6 0 0 8 2
                                   – 1 5 7 9 3 6

                                       3 0 2 1 4 6

So, 4,60,082 – 1,57,936 = 3,02,146. It is written as three lakh two thousand one
                                  hundred forty-six.

                    Checking Subtraction through Addition

To check subtraction, add the difference of the two numbers to the subtrahend. If we get the
sum same as the minuend, the subtraction is correct. If not, the subtraction is incorrect.
