Framing Word Problems on Addition

Let’s learn to frame word problems for the addition of given numbers.

Example 7: Frame two word problems for 51,289 + 21,364.
Solution: 1. There are 51,289 people in town A and 21,364 people in town B. How many
people are there in the two towns?

                                  2. Ronit had ` 51,289 in his account. He deposited ` 21,364 more. How much
money does he have in his account now?

                               Exercise 3.2

                      1. Estimate the sum by rounding off each number to the nearest 1,000. Also, check whether
the sum obtained is close to the actual sum or not.

                            (a) There are 23,465 novels, 10,250 storybooks and comic books, and 96,752 books of
various subjects in a library. Estimate the total number of books in the library.
                           (b) The population of village A is 53,628 and that of village B is 78,426. Estimate the total
                                population of the two villages.

                      2. Solve the following word problems.
                            (a) A manufacturer sold 23,650 packets of sugar to shopkeeper A, 51,173 packets of
sugar to shopkeeper B and 60,850 packets of sugar to shopkeeper C. How many
packets of sugar did the manufacturer sell in all?
                           (b) Rajat buys two cars. Car A costs ` 3,75,496 and car B costs ` 4,50,675. How much
does Rajat pay for both the cars?
                            (c) The population of a city was 5,34,296 in the year 2010. In the next year, it increased
by 45,125. What was the total population of the city in the year 2011?
                           (d) Poonam’s annual income was ` 6,42,970 in the year 2011. She got an annual increment
