Framing Word Problems on Subtraction
For a given subtraction fact, we frame word problems in the same manner as we do for an
addition fact.
Example 17: Frame two word problems for 1,50,000 – 75,000.
Solution: 1. Arjun had ` 1,50,000 in his bank account. He withdrew ` 75,000 and invested in
some policy. How much money is now left in his account?
2. There were 1,50,000 people in town A. If 75,000 people shifted to town B, then
how many people are left in town A?
Exercise 3.4
1. Estimate the difference between the following numbers using the estimation method
by rounding off each number to the nearest 1,000. Also, check whether the estimated
difference is correct or not.
(a) 1,75,000 and 96,875 (b) 38,20,156 and 25,01,596
(c) 18,78,18,478 and 13,64,75,285 (d) 4,21,073 and 2,34,475
2. Solve the following word problems.
(a) The sum of two numbers is 2,05,618. If one number is 96,750, what is the other
number?
(b) What number should be subtracted from 6,82,357 to get 4,96,576?
(Hint: Here the minuend and difference are given.)
(c) The population of town A was 5,46,300. After a few years, 2,75,150 people moved
from town A to town B. What is the population of town A now?
(d) A wholesale dealer had 7,25,370 pens. He supplied 5,77,850 pens to shopkeepers.
How many pens is he left with now?
(e) The population of a country was 98,36,147 in 2011 and 23,64,195 in 2012. By how
much did the population decrease in 2012?
(f) The population of a country was 5,23,10,725 in 2009. In 2010, due to an earthquake
15,562 people died. In the same year, 8,476 new babies were born. What was the
new population of the country in 2010?
3. Frame two word problems for the following. Also, solve to find the answer.
