                    Place Value and Face Value

The place value of a digit depends on its place or position in a number while the face value of a
digit is the value of the digit itself in the number.

Let’s consider a 9-digit number, 62,14,36,754, and find out the place value and the face value of
the underlined digits using the place value chart given below.

                      PERIODS CRORES LAKHS THOUSANDS ONES
Place Ten Crores Ten Lakhs Ten Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones
                        Values Crores Lakhs Thousands

                                    (TC) (C) (TL) (L) (TTh) (Th) (H) (T) (O)

                    62,14,36,754 6 2 1 4 3 6 7 5 4

The face value of 2 is 2 and the place value of 2 is 2 crores or 2,00,00,000.
The face value of 1 is 1 and the place value of 1 is 1 ten lakh or 10,00,000.

The face value of 6 is 6 and the place value of 6 is 6 thousands or 6,000.
The face value of 5 is 5 and the place value of 5 is 5 tens or 50.

Example 3: Find the sum and the difference Mental Maths
of the place values of 9 and 4 in
                                                                              1. Write a 9-digit number in which the
8,92,46,313. place value of 7 is 7 lakhs.
Solution: The place value of 9 is 90,00,000. 2. What is the place value and face
The place value of 4 is 40,000. value of the digits at the crores
place of the largest 9-digit number?
                                  The sum of place values
                                    = 90,00,000 + 40,000 = 90,40,000.

                                  The difference of place values = 90,00,000 – 40,000 = 89,60,000.
Expanded Form and Standard (Short) Form

We know that expanded form of a number is the sum of the place values of its digits.
To write the standard form or short form of an expanded number, we write the face value of each
                    digit in the correct place.
Example 4: Write 23,40,28,762 in expanded form.

                    Solution: 23,40,28,762
                                  = 20,00,00,000 + 3,00,00,000 + 40,00,000 + 20,000 + 8,000 + 700 + 60 + 2

                                  = 2 ten crores + 3 crores + 4 ten lakhs + 2 ten thousands + 8 thousands + 7 hundreds
                                    + 6 tens + 2 ones

                                                                                                                         5
