• We can easily calculate time duration. For example, to calculate time duration
between 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. is not easy whereas it is easy to find out that the
duration between 0930 hours and 1430 hours is 5 hours.
Reading Timetables—Bus and Railway
We all need to plan our work according to timetable whether it is studies or vacations or
any other thing. Even modes of public transport follow a certain timetable. Thus, we need
to know how to read a timetable.
Example 8: Mr Kaushal staying in Panipat planned a holiday to Shimla. He decided to
travel by bus. Look at the timetable and answer the questions that follow.

Solution: (a) To reach Shimla early in the morning, Mr Kaushal and his family should
leave Panipat at 22:00 by the semi deluxe bus.
(b) If they take the ordinary bus from Panipat at 11:05, they will reach Shimla
at 10:00 the next morning.
Example 9: Mr Kaushal and his family plan to return to Delhi by train. There is no direct
train from Shimla. So, they have to take a bus till Kalka and then board the
train from there.
There are two Shatabdi trains from Kalka to Delhi. Their timings are as follows.
