Quota on Marks
Quotation marks (‘…’) enclose the exact words spoken by a person. They are also called
quotes or inverted commas.
Remember these points:
• The first letter within quotes should be a capital letter.
• Usually a comma separates the spoken words within the quotes from the rest of the
sentence.
‘If you don’t return to the starting point by sunset, the money will be lost,’ he added.
The elder laughed and said, ‘All of it will be yours!’
• If the quotation ends in a question mark or an exclamation mark, you don’t need to
add a comma after that to connect it to the rest of the sentence.
‘What kind of a rate is that – a day?’ he asked.
We also enclose titles of stories, essays, poems and articles within quotation marks.
Have you read the story ‘How Much Land Does a Man Need?’ by Leo Tolstoy?
