                          Vocabulary

                    Read the following sentence.

The shoemaker could not earn enough to make ends meet.

The phrase make ends meet means to have just enough money to provide for the basic
necessities. This is an example of an idiom. An idiom is a group of words that has a
different meaning from that of the words it is made of. In other words, the implied

meaning of the phrase should be considered rather than the literal meaning. Now, read this
                    sentence:
The shoemaker worked until late at night to make a pair of shoes.

We can also convey the meaning using an idiom:

The shoemaker burnt the midnight oil to make a pair of shoes.
