15            The Cyclone                           1








                     Dorothy lived in Kansas with Uncle Henry and
                     Aunt Em.















                                                                                            Their house was small with
                                                                                            only one room. When Dorothy
                                                                                            stood in the doorway and
                                                                                            looked around, she could see
                                                                                            nothing but the great grey
                                                                                            land on every side. Even the
                                                                                            grass was not green.
























                     The room had a rusty-looking cookstove, a cupboard, a table, three or four chairs and two beds. A
                     trapdoor led to a small hole dug in the ground, called a cyclone cellar, where the family could go in case
                     there was a cyclone.
                     When Aunt Em came to Kansas she was young       They had taken the sparkle from her eyes and left
                     and lively but the sun and wind had changed     them grey. She was thin now and never smiled.
