Grammar
Simple Past Tense
Read the following sentences from the lesson.
One morning the pilot came to Vasco da Gama.
A number of boats surrounded the two ships.
The verbs in the above sentences are in the simple past tense. In both the examples the
actions happened sometime in the past. So we used the past forms of the verbs come and
surround, respectively.
The simple past tense tells us about
• events that happened at a particular time in the past.
• things that happened regularly in the past.
In most cases the past tense of the verb can be formed by adding -ed or -d to the root form
of the verb (as in surrounded).
Some words change completely or do not follow any rule while changing. They change
into the past in irregular ways (as in came).
A. Complete the following sentences using the simple past forms of the verbs
given in brackets.
1. Navin __________ (lose) his key yesterday.
2. Mansoor __________ (try) to open the box but he __________ (can) not.
3. Last year we __________ (go) to Bhutan.
4. Greta __________ (write) many letters to Albert but he never __________
(reply) to any of them.
5. I __________ (see) Ravi last night.
