Preface

Computer today has become an essential tool in our lives. It is possibly one of the most powerful
inventions in history. Computer has signifi cantly impacted our lives in the past decade and

has created numerous opportunities for its users. Apart from doing a lot of other things,
a computer enhances the process of learning in children. Therefore, it is important for
children to acquire computer literacy at an early age and gradually improve their profi ciency.
ICSE Computer Studies is one such eff ort which strives to reach students at various levels and
ease the learning process. The series helps the children to view computer as a friend so that
they not only learn it but also enjoy using it.

ICSE Computer Studies is a series of 8 books for classes 1 to 8. The series is designed as per
the new curriculum released by the Council for the Indian School Certifi cate Examinations
(CISCE). The child-centric series has been designed to develop appropriate knowledge, skills
and attitudes in children. The series is based on Windows 10 (system software) and Microsoft

Offi ce 2016 (application software). All screenshots included in the series are of Windows 10
and MS Offi ce 2016 version.

The books at the primary level introduce students to the basics of computers and the Internet,
apart from word processing (Word 2016) and presentation (PowerPoint 2016) software. The
children have also been introduced to Paint program at this level which helps the students
to acquire keyboard and mouse skills. The children have also been introduced to coding at
this level with child-friendly programming software called Scratch. The books also include the
information about latest developments in the IT sector.

The books at the secondary level extensively cover advanced features of Word 2016, PowerPoint
2016 and Scratch. The books also include introduction to spreadsheets (Excel 2016), Database,
HTML, JAVA, App Development and Cloud Computing in respective classes.

This is an activity-oriented series with plenty of screen captures, colourful illustrations,
creatively designed exercises and individual and group activities. Each chapter introduces a
new concept in a step-by-step manner. The language is simple and conversational to keep the

students engrossed.

Keeping in mind the learning aptitude of the students, an interactive learning app containing
activities, printable worksheets, exercises, computer etiquettes, technopedia, is provided with
each book of the series.

We welcome suggestions to improve the series which will be incorporated in future editions.
