                                                • It is based on the use of Wi-Fi technology and radio waves.
                                                • These hotspots can be accessed at places like universities,

                      • The concept of the Internet was fi rst proposed by the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA)
of the US government in 1969. In fact, the Internet began as a network called the ARPANET.
                      • A MODEM changes a computer’s digital signal into an analog signal and an analog signal into
a digital signal. Both the sending and receiving ends of a communication channel must have a
MODEM for data transmission to occur.
                      • Companies like MTNL, BSNL, Airtel, Tata and Reliance are ISPs.

                    Popular Services on the Internet

A user can avail various services on the Internet. Let’s discuss some popularly used
                    services.

                    Video Conferencing

Video conferencing has completely changed the atmosphere of a modern offi ce. With
video conferencing systems, the participants not only hear the voice but also see each
other. The communication takes place either in one-way or multi-way modes. In one-

way mode, one of the participants sends the information and others receive it. In multi-
way mode, two or more participants can send or receive the information simultaneously.

The process of video conferencing involves some basic steps, which are as follows.

                    • During video conferencing, a video camera installed at the sending device
continuously captures pictures of the person, which is then converted into
                       compressed digital video signals.
