•  PC Card MODEM: It looks like a credit card and is designed for laptops and handheld
                       computers. It can be easily inserted in these computers. There is no requirement of a
                       cable. The user can easily remove the MODEM when it is not required.



                    Telephone Line
                    The information we send and receive over the Internet travels through telephone cables.



                    Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) Line
                    Information that travels through the ISDN is two to four times faster than through

                    any MODEM available. Many telephone companies off er ISDN lines to connect to the
                    Internet.



                    Internet Service Provider (ISP)
                    The service provider can be any organisation that gives us the facility for connecting to
                    the Internet. The service provider usually allows the use of the Internet for a charge.

                    Some of the most popular ISPs are Airtel, Reliance, BSNL and Vodafone.

                    Types of Internet Connection


                    The following table shows various types of Internet connection that connect us to the
                    Internet.

                      Internet Connection                                      Features

                     Dial-Up Connection         •  It requires the phone to be connected to a computer.
                                                •  No calls can be made or received while the Internet is being used.

                     Broadband Connection •  It uses a wide bandwidth providing high Internet speed.
                                                •  It is faster than dial-up connection.
                                                •  Phone calls can be made or received while using this connection.

                     Cable TV Connection        •  It is provided through Cable TV lines.
                                                •  It used a cable MODEM that provides fast Internet access.

                     Satellite Connection         A satellite dish is installed to connect to the satellite in areas
                                                  where the facility of broadband connection is unavailable.

                     Digital Subscriber Line  •  A two-wire copper telephone line is used that enables the user to
                     (DSL)                        make calls while using the Internet.
                                               •  The user can access this line by paying a monthly fee to the ISP.

                     Wireless Connection        •  It off ers a high Internet speed.
                                               •  It uses radio frequency for transmission.
                                               •  It needs a Wi-Fi MODEM to be linked to a computer.
                                               •  The user can access it from any location having network coverage.
