Example 5: Following is the list of temperatures of five places in India on a particular day of
the year. (NCERT)
Place Temperature
Siachin 10°C below 0°C ________
Shimla 2°C below 0°C ________
Ahmedabad 30°C above 0°C ________
Delhi 20°C above 0°C ________
Srinagar 5°C below 0°C ________
(a) Write the temperatures of these places in the form of integers in the blank column.
(b) Following is the number line representing the temperature in degree Celsius.
Plot the name of the city against its temperature.
–25 –20 –15 –10 –5 0 5 10 15 20 25 30 35 40
(c) Which is the coolest place?
(d) Write the names of the places where the temperature is above 10°C.
Solution: (a) Place Temperature
Siachin 10°C below 0°C –10°C
Shimla 2°C below 0°C –2°C
Ahmedabad 30°C above 0°C +30°C
Delhi 20°C above 0°C +20°C
Srinagar 5°C below 0°C –5°C
Srinagar
Siachin Shimla Delhi Ahmedabad
(b)
–25 –20 –15 –10 –5 0 5 10 15 20 25 30 35 40
(c) Siachin is the coolest place.
(d) Delhi and Ahmedabad
Example 6: In each of the following pairs, which number is to the right of the other on the
number line?

Solution: (a) 7 is to the right of 2 on the number line.
(b) –2 is to the right of –9 on the number line.
(c) 0 is to the right of –3 on the number line.
(d) 100 is to the right of –11 on the number line.
Example 7: Write all the integers between the given pairs in increasing order.
(a) 0 and –5 (b) –3 and 3 (c) –101 and –97
Solution: (a) Integers between 0 and –5 in increasing order are –4, –3, –2 and –1.
(b) Integers between –3 and 3 in increasing order are –2, –1, 0, 1 and 2.
