P. 148
Example 10: A class test starts at 9:15 a.m. It is of 45 minutes duration. When will it finish?
Solution: Starting time = 9:15 a.m. = 9 h 15 min h min
Duration = 45 min 9 1 5
Finishing time = 9 h 15 min + 45 min + 4 5
= 10 h 1
= 10:00 a.m. 9 6 0
10 0 0
Example 11: A football match started at 5:00 p.m. and finished at 6:30 p.m. What was the
duration of the match?
Solution: Starting time = 5:00 p.m. = 5 h h min
Finishing time = 6:30 p.m. = 6 h 30 min 6 3 0
Duration of match = 6 h 30 min – 5 h – 5 0 0
= 1 h 30 min 1 3 0
Example 12: What is the duration of time between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.?
Solution: Time from 8 p.m. to 12 midnight = 4 h
Time from 12 midnight to 6 a.m. = 6 h
Duration of time from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. = 4 h + 6 h = 10 h

Calendar A Challenge!
You have already learnt that there are 12 months in a year 1 week and a quarter day
and each month has 30 or 31 days with an exception of = __________ hours
28 days in February.
A leap year has one day more than a normal year. Thus a leap year has 366 days. Every
fourth year is a leap year. Years which are divisible by 4 are leap years. For example, 2004,
2008, etc. are leap years.
