Division as Repeated Subtraction
You remember how the sports teacher divided 12 balls among 4 players.
By giving 1 ball to each till all were distributed.
This is the way of dividing by repeated subtraction.
You will notice that while dividing 12 balls, he actually subtracted 4, 3 times from
12.
• First he distributed 4 balls. 12 – 4 = 8
• Then he distributed 4 balls again. 8 – 4 = 4
• Finally he distributed the leftover 4 balls. 4 – 4 = 0
Thus, he distributed 12 balls in this way: 12 – 4 – 4 – 4
Or, we can say that he subtracted 4 three times from 12 to divide the balls.
Thus, 12 ÷ 4 = 3.
2 Divide by repeated subtraction. Correct the numbers in the circles wherever
needed. One example is done for you.
(a) 12 ÷ 3 = 4
3 3
12 – 3 – 3 – 2 – 2
(b) 18 ÷ 6 =
18 – 6 – 3 – 3
