3 Addition
Learning Outcomes
Students will be able to learn:
to add numbers (up to four digits) with or without regrouping.
addition facts.
to add numbers using expanded form.
to estimate the sum of two or more numbers and their verifi cation.
to solve word problems involving addition in real-life contexts.
to frame word problems based on a mathematical statement on addition.
We have already learnt how to add 1-digit, 2-digit and 3-digit numbers. Let's learn how to
add 4-digit numbers.
Addition of Numbers (without carry over)
To add numbers, we fi rst add the ones, followed by the tens, the hundreds, and so on.
Example 1: Add 3,123; 1,242 and 4,314.
Solu on: Step 1: Add the ones and write the Step 2: Add the tens and write the
sum under the ones place. sum under the tens place.
3 + 2 + 4 = 9 2 + 4 + 1 = 7
Th H T O Th H T O
3 1 2 3 3 1 2 3
1 2 4 2 1 2 4 2
+ 4 3 1 4 + 4 3 1 4
9 7 9
Step 3: Add the hundreds and write Step 4: Add the thousands and
the sum under the hundreds write the sum under the
place. thousands place.
1 + 2 + 3 = 6 3 + 1 + 4 = 8
Th H T O Th H T O
3 1 2 3 3 1 2 3
1 2 4 2 1 2 4 2
+ 4 3 1 4 + 4 3 1 4
6 7 9 8 6 7 9
So, 3,123 + 1,242 + 4,314 = 8,679.
