Example 22: Convert the following to millilitres. Top Tip
(a) 17 L and (b) 24 L 451 mL
To convert L into
Solu on: (a) 17 L = 17 × 1,000 mL = 17,000 mL mL, we put three
zeros to the right of
(b) 24 L 451 mL = (24 × 1,000) mL + 451 mL the number.
= 24,000 mL + 451 mL =24,451 mL
Millilitres to litres
When we convert millilitres to litres or litres to millilitres, the last three digits always stand
for millilitres and the rest of the digits stand for litres.
Example 23: Convert the following to litres or litres and millilitres.
(a) 27,000 mL (b) 36,957 mL
Solu on: (a) 27,000 mL = 27 L (b) 36,957 mL = 36 L 957 mL
Exercise 11.7
1. Convert the following to millilitres.
(a) 45 L (b) 78 L (c) 9 L 6 mL (d) 65 L 20 mL
(e) 90 L 100 mL (f) 57 L 83 mL (g) 57 L 950 mL (h) 15 L 150 mL
2. Convert the following to litres, or litres and millilitres.
(a) 67,000 mL (b) 74,000 mL (c) 81,006 mL (d) 59,350 mL
(e) 8,734 mL (f) 1,008 mL (g) 32,890 mL (h) 38,904 mL
Addition and Subtraction of Capacities
We add or subtract capaci es in the same way as we add or subtract lengths and weights.
Example 24: Add 3 L 215 mL, 4 L 380 mL Example 25: Subtract 39 L 726 mL
and 6 L 79 mL. from 40 L 250 mL.
