Measuring or Drawing a Line Segment
We all have seen a ruler. It has markings on it starting from 0. On one side, it is
marked with centimetres and on the opposite side, it is marked with inches. Each
small division, i.e., from 0-1, 1-2, 2-3 and so on, represents 1 cm on one side. The
other side of the ruler represents inches. Nowadays, measurement is generally done
in centimetres. Each centimetre is further divided into 10 small divisions represented
by millimetres.
Top Tip
If a ruler does not show ‘0’ mark clearly or if the mark is erased, then we can fi nd the length
of a line segment by placing the ruler at 1 cm. If you start measuring from 1 and end at 9,
then the actual measurement is 9 cm – 1 cm = 8 cm which is the length of the line segment.
