Oval
An oval is a plane closed fi gure that has no sides or edges and corners or
ver ces. It is like a fl a ened circle which resembles the shape of an egg or
an ellipse.
Solid Shapes
Solids are the objects that have a defi nite shape and occupy space. They are also known
as three-dimensional (3D) fi gures. Let’s study some proper es related to solids.
• The face of a solid is its surface.
• The edge of a solid is the side where two faces meet.
• The vertex of a solid is the point where three edges meet.
Some common solids that we see in our daily life are described here.
Cube
Vertex
Cube is a solid made up of 6 fl at square-shaped
faces or 6 equal square sides.
It consists of 12 straight edges and 8 ver ces. Edge
Face
Dice, sugar cube and Rubik’s cube are some examples of cube. Cube
Cuboid
Cuboid is a solid made up of 6 flat faces.
Four of them are always rectangular and Vertex
the other two may be rectangular or
square in shape.
It consists of 12 straight edges and Edge
8 ver ces. Face Cuboid
Matchbox and brick are some examples of cuboid.
Sphere
Curved face/
Sphere is a solid with only 1 curved surface. Surface
It has no edge or vertex.
Football and globe are some examples of sphere. Sphere
Cylinder Flat Edge
surface
Cylinder is a solid with 2 flat and 1 curved surface.
It has 2 curved edges but does not have any vertex.
Curved
Gas cylinder, candle, rolling pin and tubelight are surface
some examples of cylinder. Cylinder
