6 Plants in the Surroundings
and Environment
We see a large variety of plants around us as they KEY CONCEPTS
grow almost everywhere. Without plants, life on
earth cannot exist. We depend on plants for food • Parts of a plant

for maintaining a balance in the environment.
• Things we get from plants
Let’s recollect our previous learning on the diff erent
parts of the plant and their functions.
Parts of a Plant
We already know that a plant has many parts. Each part has a specifi c role to perform.
Roots hold the plant in its place and absorb nutrients from the soil to pass them to the
other parts of plant.
Stem holds the plant straight and gives support to the plant. It carries water and minerals
from the roots, and food from the leaves to various parts of the plant.
Leaf is the thin, fl at and usually green part
of the plant which grows from its stem or
bud
branch. It prepares food by the process of
fl ower
photosynthesis in the presence of air, water
and sunlight. It also helps in the exchange branch
of gases through stomata. shoot fruit
Flower helps a plant to reproduce. It leaf
develops into fruit in most plants.
Fruit encloses and protects the seeds stem
present inside it.
A plant has two main systems—the root root
system and the shoot system. Let’s know
