                                         Push and Pull

We push or pull objects in our everyday life for KEY CONCEPTS

various purposes, for example, to move them
                                                                                    • Push and pull
from one place to another, to stop them, and to
                                                                                    • Force
change their shape, size, speed or direction. We
cannot move them from rest until and unless they are either pushed or pulled. Thus, a

push or pull that acts on an object is called force. We apply force to do our work. The use
of force is very common in doing our daily activities.

Let’s learn about push and pull in this chapter.

                    Push and Pull

Push is an act of moving an object forward by applying force on it. We usually push
things using our hands. Pushing makes the object move away from us. Some examples

of push in our daily life are as follows.

                    • We push the pedals of a bicycle to move it forward.

                    • We push (kick) the football while playing football.

                    • We push the door forward to close it.

                    • We insert the thumb pin on the notice board by
                        pushing it.

                    • We walk on the ground by pushing our feet on it.

                    • We write on the paper by pushing a pen or pencil

                        on it.

                    • We push our hand forward to throw a ball in the
                        air.

                    • We change the shape of things by squeezing
them, for example, kneading dough for chapati.
