10 Sun as a Natural

                                         Resource

Sun is a huge ball of fi re. It is actually a star KEY CONCEPTS

and the brightest object seen in the sky
                                                                                  • Sun—A natural source of energy
during daytime. The light of the sun makes
                                                                                  • Eff ect of sun on seasons
us see objects around us. The sunlight, heat • Sources of energy
and energy given out by the sun makes life • Conservation of energy

possible on the earth and keeps its surface
                    warm.

                    Sun—A Natural Source of Energy

We already know that the sun is a natural non-living thing. It is a natural source
of energy that is present in abundance. The energy we get from the sun is called

solar energy. It is easily available and does not pollute the environment. Thus, it is
                    the cleanest source of energy.

Importance of sun for living things

The sun is of great importance to all living carbon dioxide
                                                                                             (from air)
things. Plants cannot grow in the absence
                                                                                                           sunlight
of sunlight because they take energy from
                                                                                                        (from the sun)
sunlight and use it for photosynthesis. Plants
store solar energy in their roots, stems and

                    fruits as food. chlorophyll
                                                                                                           (in the leaf)
Human beings and animals get solar
energy indirectly by eating plants and plant water

                    products. (from soil)

Uses of solar energy Plants use sunlight for photosynthesis

Sun’s energy is used for various purposes. Some of them are as follows.

                    • Solar water heaters or geysers use solar energy to heat water.
