Observe the Three Forms of Water

Perform this activity with an elder to see the three forms of water.

                    You Need:
1 litre water, a pan with lid, a gas stove, lighter or a
matchstick box, a tong, an ice tray, a refrigerator

                    What to Do:
                    • Take a pan and fi ll it with water. Keep it for boiling
on fl ame. You will observe steam or vapour rising
from water when it starts boiling. Water vapour is
the gaseous form of water that rises and mixes in
                       the air around us.

                    • Now switch off the fl ame and keep a lid on the pan. After sometime, remove the lid carefully
using a tong. You will observe tiny drops of water on the lid. These drops are formed when
the steam touches the lid surface and cools down. This is the liquid form of water.
                    • Next let the water in the pan cool completely. Pour it in an ice tray and keep it in the freezer
for a few hours. Take out the tray and you will observe that the water has changed into ice.
Ice is formed when water freezes. This is the solid form of water.
                    • If the ice tray is kept outside the freezer for a long time, the ice will again change into its
liquid form. This happens due to melting of ice.

                    Observation:
You will observe the three diff erent forms of water such as water vapour (gas), water (liquid)
                    and ice (solid).

                    Result:
This shows that water can change in any one of the three forms by heating or cooling.

Based on the activity, answer the following questions.
                    1. What are the three diff erent forms of water you have observed in the above experiment?
                    2. How does water change from one form to another?

                                                                                                   Project Time
                       Group Activity
Work in groups and make a model of ways to save water
                                                                                                 Write some eff ective
