Subject–Verb Agreement
Read these sentences.
It was a very old book.
Tommy and Margie were reading the book.
The underlined words are the subjects of the sentences. Look at the italicized verbs in the sentences.
They must agree with the subject they refer to in order to convey the correct meaning.
1. The most important rule of subject–verb agreement is that the verb must agree with its
subject in person and number. A verb can change depending on whether the subject is
• in the fi rst person, second person or third person.
• singular or plural.
2. When the subject of a sentence is composed of two or more singular nouns or pronouns
connected by and, we use a plural verb.
Margie and her neighbour Tommy study together.
Fahad and she are good friends.
3. However, if two singular nouns refer to the same person or thing or to a single idea, we use a
singular verb.
Bread and milk is the only food he dislikes.
The writer and activist is at the award ceremony.
Note that in the second sentence, the article is used only once – before the fi rst noun. If we
wish to refer to two separate people, we would use the article before each noun and the verb
would be plural.
The writer and the activist are at the award ceremony.
