Past Con nuous Tense
Read the following sentence.
Prometheus and Epimetheus were feeling lonely.
A Greek hero was sailing over the mountain in a golden cup.
The verbs were feeling and was sailing refer to actions that were going on at a particular time
in the past. They are in the past continuous tense. The past continuous tense is formed by
combining the helping verbs was/were with the -ing form of the main verb.
was/were + -ing form of the main verb
We use the past continuous tense also to talk about an action that was in progress when
another action happened in the past. Look at the following sentence.
The children were doing their homework when I got home.
