learning easier,Yoshizawa decided to use paper folding as a teaching tool. As a child he
had learnt how to make origami and thought it was helpful in teaching and learning

mathematics. Yoshizawa’s work was exhibited in several cities like Tokyo, New York
and Amsterdam. His personal method is known as “wet-folding”and he never used
scissors or glue to make his structures.’
‘What is wet-folding?’ asked Taher. ‘In the wet-folding method, the paper has to be
10
dampened before making the fold. This makes it soft and it is then easier to shape the
paper into figures,’ said Revathi. ‘The paper used for this method of folding is slightly
thicker than the regular origami paper. I have some sheets of such paper with me. I’ll
show it to you.’
‘Regular origami paper is usually coloured on one side and white on the other. The

folding of paper aims to reveal and conceal the coloured side of the paper according
to the design,’ Revathi said.
After lunch the four of them sat around a worktable busily folding paper. ‘We want
to make a thousand paper cranes too!’ said Taher. Revathi and her father gladly agreed
to help. ‘We can ask the other kids to come join us. Then it will bring good luck for
us all,’ said Reem happily.
