Let’s understand the concept of reasoning and problem-solving with the help of an
example.
Suppose, to organise a picnic with your family and friends, you need to follow the given
steps.
• Count the total number of family members and friends.
• Inform the family members through phone call.
• Select the venue best suited as per the weather conditions.
• Make a list of eatables to be carried along.
• Make arrangement for vehicles required for commuting.
• Check the weather conditions of the picnic spot and
carry necessary things accordingly.
• Ensure that everyone enjoys at the picnic.
• Ensure that the food items are properly served to them.
All the steps involved in the above process are important. If any step is not followed
properly or missed, it will impact the entire event. For example, if the venue is not
selected as per the weather conditions, the people will not enjoy. Also, the quantity of
eatables will not be proper if the number of people are not decided.
At times, there are conditions when everything is properly planned and executed,
still some problems come up. Such problems need to be reasoned out and solved.
For example, suddenly if one of the vehicles breaks down on the way to picnic, then
arrangements need to be made for another vehicle to carry the people to the picnic
spot. Similarly, there may be other such problems which need to be resolved.

Using the problem-solving technique, complicated problems can be converted to simple steps
and possible solutions can be easily achieved.
Let’s learn about some more cases and the steps involved in solving them.
Case 1: Your little brother does not know how to make a greetings card. Help him to
make the card by following the given instructions.
• Collect the materials needed for making a greetings card. You will need thick sheet of
paper or blank cards, glue, a pair of scissors, pen, pencil, eraser, sketch pens, crayons,
water colours and decoration items.
• Take out a thick sheet of paper or a blank card and fold it in half. You can also cut the
paper in smaller size if needed.
