The Internet has changed the modern life to a great extent. Every kind of information is
available on it. It provides us with millions of applications.
Birth of Internet
In 1970s, the US Defence department established an agency for research and analysis in
the fi eld of defence. This agency was named Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA).
ARPA set-up a network of computers between diff erent offi ces of defence department
to exchange and share important information. This network of computers was called
ARPANET.
Later ARPANET was opened for educational fields also. Many universities and institutions
started using this network of computers for educational purposes. ARPANET kept on
growing continuously leading to the birth of the Internet.

Requirements for an Internet Connection
There are some hardware and software requirements to connect a computer to the
Internet. Let’s learn about them.
Web Browser: A computer system with Internet Browsing Software such as Microsoft
Internet Explorer or Google Chrome is required.
Telephone Line: A telephone line that can
be used for sending and receiving the data is
required.
MODEM: A modulator-demodulator, known as
MODEM is required to connect the telephone
line with a computer. It converts digital data of
the sender’s computer into analog signals that
can be transmitted over the phone line and
converts them back to digital form at the receiving end.
ISP: An Internet Service Provider (ISP) is a company that off ers connectivity to the
Internet. When we send or receive the information on the Internet, it fi rst reaches the
ISP. Some Indian ISPs are BSNL, VSNL, MTNL, Airtel, Tata and Reliance.
