The Internet Terminology
The important terms related to the Internet are described below.
Home Page: The main page of a website is called the home page. This is the fi rst page
which appears when we open a website.
Hyperlink: A web page has many things such as links to a topic which may be on the
same page or on an entirely diff erent document. These are called hyperlinks.
URL: URL or Uniform Resource Locator is the address of a web page. It is unique for
each web page. The URL of a webpage is entered in the Address bar of a web browser.
Web Browser: A web browser is a software that is used to access information on the
Internet.
Web Page: It is a page on the Internet which contains information in the form of text,
graphics, audio and video. It has links to other web pages. It has its own web address.
Website: A website is a collection of web pages
containing information that is related.
World Wide Web (WWW): World Wide Web is
a collection of various websites. These sites
collectively form a structure similar to a spider
web over the Internet and are therefore called
World Wide Web.
Net Surfi ng
The process of searching information on the
World Wide Web and moving from one web page
to another in an undirected manner is called net
surfing. The user usually visits web pages that
interests him/her at that moment during net
surfi ng.
Links are available on the Internet in the form of highlighted text, buttons or images.
Search Engine
A search engine is a computer program that searches
for information on the Internet. Google (https://www.
google.com) is the world’s most popular search engine.
