• A computer is a smart machine which helps us to do several tasks like typing letters, solving
mathematical problems, making drawings and colouring.
• The two basic components of a computer with the help of which a computer system works are
hardware and software.
• A monitor displays everything we do on a computer. There are three types of monitors:
1. Cathode Ray Monitor (CRT Monitor)

• A mouse helps us to point at or select an object on a computer screen. It usually has two
buttons: left button and right button.
• There are two types of software: system software and application software.
• A computer cannot operate on its own without a system software.
• Word processing software (Word 2016), spreadsheet software (Excel 2016), presentation
software (PowerPoint 2016) and Paint are some examples of application software.
• A computer works on the principle of IPO (Input–Processing–Output) cycle.
