Liquid
The molecules in liquids are not tightly packed. They have
weak force of attraction between them, so the molecules in a
liquid move freely. Because of this, liquids have the following
properties.
(i) Liquids do not have a fi xed shape. They take the shape of
the container in which they are poured or kept.
(ii) They have a fi xed volume which can be measured. Arrangement of
molecules in liquids
(iii) They occupy space.
(iv) Liquids can fl ow easily. They fl ow from high level to low level. Water, petrol, soft
drink and milk are some liquids.
ACTIVITY TIME
To observe properties of solid
You Need:
Solid: Pebble, a container
What to Do:
• Place the pebble in any container.
Observe:
• The pebble has fi xed shape in any container.
• The pebble has fi xed volume, it can be measured.
• The pebble stays in the same place. It does not fl ow.
To observe properties of liquid
You Need:
Liquid: Soft drink, 3–4 glass containers of diff erent shapes
What to Do:
• Pour the soft drink in glass containers of diff erent
shapes one by one.
Observe:
• The liquid does not have any fi xed shape. It takes
the shape of the container in which it is poured.
• Measure the liquid. It has fi xed volume.
• It will fl ow easily wherever it is poured.
