1 Human Body—The
Circulatory System
We know that a human body is made up of a KEY CONCEPTS
number of organs. A group of organs that work
together to carry out a particular function forms • Parts of the circulatory system
• Process of circulation
an organ system. Examples of organ systems
include digestive system, respiratory system,
excretory system and circulatory system.
Organ systems work in coordination to perform various
activities that take place inside human body. For example,
digestive system helps in digestion of food. This includes
artery
breakdown of food into smaller particles, absorption of vein
nutrients and removal of undigested food. The nutrients heart
absorbed during digestion needs to be transported
throughout the body. This involves another organ system,
i.e., circulatory system that helps in the transportation of
nutrients to various parts of the body. Similarly, gases like
oxygen and carbon dioxide, and water are also transported
by circulatory system. The system that helps in the
transportation of substances to and from various parts of
the body is called the circulatory system.
In this chapter, we will learn about diff erent parts of the
circulatory system and the process of circulation.

Parts of the Circulatory System in human beings
The circulatory system comprises of three main parts—heart, blood and blood vessels.
Heart
The heart is a muscular organ that acts like a pump to force blood throughout the body.
It is located in the chest cavity between the two lungs and is slightly tilted towards the
left. It is about the size of our fi st.
