Addition (with carry over)
Example 3: Find the sum of 28,43,62,137 and 30,37,89,248.
TC C TL L TTh Th H T O
Solution: 2 8 1 4 1 3 1 6 2 1 1 3 7
+ 3 0 3 7 8 9 2 4 8
5 8 8 1 5 1 3 8 5
So, 28,43,62,137 + 30,37,89,248 = 58,81,51,385.
Example 4: Find the sum of 28,43,176; 31,82,940 and 17,56,079.
TL L TTh Th H T O
Solution: 1 2 1 8 1 4 1 3 1 1 1 7 6
3 1 8 2 9 4 0
+ 1 7 5 6 0 7 9 Maths Fun
7 7 8 2 1 9 5 How can you add eight
8’s to get the number
Example 5: Find the missing digits. 1,000? (Use only
addition)
TL L TTh Th H T O
3 ? 8 ? 7 ? 5
+ ? 1 ? 4 9 6 ?
5 9 4 1 ? 8 3
Solution: Step 1: In the ones column,
5 + ? = 3
3 is smaller than 5. So, we find a number which when added to 5
gives a sum whose unit digit is 3.
5 + 8 = 13
13 is a two digit number. Keep the ones 3 and carry over the
tens 1 .
So, we write 8 in the blank space.
Step 2: In the tens column,
1 + ? + 6 = 8
7 + ? = 8
Now we know that 7 + 1 = 8
