6. A tile is 15 cm long and 10 cm wide. The four walls of the kitchen need to be tiled.
If the length and breadth of each wall is 440 cm and 750 cm, how many tiles will be
required to tile the entire kitchen?

              7. The perimeter of a rectangular garden is 160 m. If it is 10 m wide, find its area.

            Volume

We have already learnt about capacity of an object. This capacity is also called volume.
Thus volume of an object is the space occupied by the object. The unit of volume is cubic
centimetre, i.e., cm or cubic metre, i.e., m or any other cubic unit.
                                 3
                                                          3
We have studied about some solid shapes like cuboid and cube.
A solid shape that has length, breadth and height is called a cuboid. A cuboid in which
length, breadth and height are equal is a cube.

1 mm This is a cube of volume 1 cubic
                                 millimetre (1 mm ).
                                                     3
                   1 mm
            1 mm
                                                                              Remember

1 cm This is a cube of volume 1 cubic When length, breadth and
centimetre (1 cm ). height are all equal to 1 unit,
                                                    3
1 cm then it is called a unit cube.
             1 cm

1 m This is a cube of volume 1 cubic

                                 metre (1 m ).
                                              3
                        1 m
              1 m
            Look at the given figure.
                                                                                                      1 cm height (h)
Since 6 unit cubes are joined together, the volume of the
            cuboid obtained is 6 cubic centimetre, i.e., 6 × 1 cm = 6 cm 3 1 cm 1 cm 1 cm1 cm 1 cm 1 cm 1 cm breadth (b)
                                                                  3
                                                                                      length (l)
                             = 6 cm × 1 cm × 1 cm

                                 ↓ ↓ ↓
                              Length Breadth Height
Let’s now add another set of 6 cubes next to the above set of cubes.

            Volume of the cuboid now = 12 × 1 cm = 12 cm 3 1 cm
                                                        3
                                          = 6 cm × 2 cm × 1 cm
                                                                                                          2 cm
                                              ↓ ↓ ↓
                                           Length Breadth Height 6 cm
Thus, the volume of a cuboid is the product of all its sides (Length × Breadth × Height).
