                                           Measurement

                            Let’s Recall …

                            • Length: 1 km = 1,000 m 1 m = 100 cm 1 cm = 10 mm
                            • Weight: 1 kg = 1,000 g 1 g = 1,000 mg

                            • Capacity: 1 kL = 1,000 L 1 L = 1,000 mL

             1 Convert the following.
                 (a) 5,350 m = ______ km ____ m (b) 9 kg 478 g = ______ g

                  (c) 17 km = ______ m (d) 12 L 830 mL = ______ mL
                 (e) 8 m 75 cm = ______ cm (f) 4 g 375 mg = ______ mg

             2 Add.

                 (a) 85 m 50 cm and 25 m 85 cm (b) 72 kg, 9 kg 450 g and 3 kg 127 g

                  (c) 15 L 35 mL, 36 L 460 mL and 140 mL (d) 120 g, 64 kg and 37 kg 19 g

             3 Subtract.
                 (a) 8 kL 580 L from 37 kL (b) 19 kg 5 g from 28 kg

                  (c) 15 m 25 cm from 35 m 19 cm (d) 27 g from 80 g 25 mg

4 Rajat and his mother go for shopping. They travel 20 km 15 m by metro and then walk
5 m to reach the market. How much distance do they cover in all? In the market they buy
2 kg 250 g of sweets and 1 kg 500 g of snacks. What is their total weight? While returning
Rajat has 450 mL orange juice and his mother has 250 mL pineapple juice. How much
juice do they have in all?

            Metric System

Every measurement has a standard unit. This unit comes under a system called metric system.
In metric system, the standard unit of length is metre (m).

The other units of measurement are either bigger or smaller than it. Their relation to the
standard unit is by multiples of 10.

            Length
In the earlier classes, we have learnt how to measure the length of small objects using a
15 cm scale. We also know that we use mm to measure very small lengths like the length
of the tip of a pencil or a pen, length of finger nails, etc.

There are 10 millimetres (mm) in 1 cm. 1 cm = 10 mm
