Reading Time to the Exact Minute
The short hand or hour hand always denotes the hour it is at or has passed by. For example,
if the hour hand is exactly at 7, it means 7 o‘clock. If the hour hand is somewhere between
7 and 8, it means the time is 7 hours and some minutes.
The long hand or minute hand always denotes the minute it is at. One way is to start
counting the number of small markings from 12.
Between every two numbers, there are four small markings. To find out where the minute
hand is, multiply the nearest number it has passed with 5 and add the remaining small
markings, if any. To check the position of the minute hand accurately, extend its length to
see which mark it reaches or use a ruler.
Look at the given example.
Example 1: Write the time shown in the clock. 11 12 1
10 2
Solution: The minute hand has passed 2 and is 3 small markings 9 3
ahead. 8 4
7 6 5
So, it is (2 × 5) + 3 = 10 + 3 = 13 minutes.
The hour hand is after 7. 7:13
Hence the time is 7:13 or seven thirteen. We can also call
it thirteen past seven. seven thirteen
