                            Let’s Recall ...

                              • A fraction is a part of a whole or a collection.

                                                1 of a whole 1 of a collection
                                                3 3
                                   1
In the fraction , 1 is the numerator and 3 is the denominator. We name a fraction
                                   3
by first saying the numerator followed by the ordinal name of the denominator. For
                            1 1
example, is read as one-third. The only exception is which is read as half. If the

numerator is greater than 1, add ‘s’ to the ordinal name. For example, is read as
                                                                                                  5
                 two-fifths.
              • To find:
                      1
                 (a) of a whole or a collection, divide by 2.
                      2
                      1
                 (b) of a whole or a collection, divide by 3.
                      3
                      1
                 (c) of a whole or a collection, divide by 4.
                      4

1 Colour the figures to show the given fractions.
