14 11 Step 3: Subtract the remaining hundreds. 6 being
                                  5 4 1 14 bigger than 4 cannot be subtracted.
                                   6 5 2 4
Borrow 1 thousand from the thousands
                              – 4 6 8 7
place and add it to 4 hundreds.
                                        8 3 7
                                                                 10 hundreds + 4 hundreds = 14 hundreds

14 is bigger than 6, so now we can subtract.

                                                                 14 – 6 = 8

14 11 Step 4: Subtract the remaining thousands.
                                  5 4 1 14
                                     6 5 2 4 5 – 4 = 1

                              – 4 6 8 7

                                   1 8 3 7

                             So, 6524 – 4687 = 1837.

In other words, the difference between 6524 and 4687 is 1837.

Example 3: Find the difference between 3926 and 6205.

            Solution:
                                  Th H T O
                                        1 10 9 15 Step 1: Subtract the ones.

                                    6 2 0 5 But 5 – 6 is not possible.
                              – 3 9 2 6

                                                    9

                             (a) We need to borrow 1 ten from the tens place. But in the tens place
we have 0. So, we cannot borrow 1.

                             (b) We now move to the hundreds place. There is 2 in the hundreds
place. So, we borrow 1 hundred from the hundreds place and add
                                  it to 0 tens.

                                  10 tens + 0 tens = 10 tens.

                             (c) We borrow 1 ten from the tens place and add it to 5 ones.

                                  10 ones + 5 ones = 15 ones

                                  Subtract 15 – 6 = 9.
