Time
Ricky and Simran have come for boating with their parents. The boatsman tells
them to wait for fifteen minutes. The children ask how long fifteen minutes are.
Mummy and papa explain.
Look carefully
at the watch
on my hand.
These are
for hours and
minutes. We read
time with them.
What are these
markings on the
watch?
A watch has numbers from 1 to 12 written
on it. It also has many big and small
markings on its face. hour 12 minute
marking 11 1 hand
The bigger markings are for hours. 10 2
9 3
The smaller markings are for minutes. hour
minute 8 4 hand
There are two hands in a watch. marking 7 6 5
The short hand is the hour hand.
The long hand is the minute hand.
When the hour hand moves from one number to another we call it one hour.
The minute hand moves faster than the hour hand. It completes one full circle
of the watch face in one hour.
We also use clocks to read time. But we don’t wear them on our wrist. We hang
them on walls or keep them on tables and shelves. Watches and clocks come
in many designs and shapes. The common shapes are circular or rectangular.
