Mapping the Space Around Through Visual Estimation
In daily life, we face many situations where we have to estimate the space inside a carton, a box, a
book shelf, etc., to decide the approximate number of objects that a carton or a box can contain. Here,
we have to estimate the space visually without actually measuring it. This type of estimation of space
is called visual estimation.
Let us consider few real life examples that required visual estimation.
(a) Riya wants to buy a bookshelf to arrange her books. While
purchasing, she has to estimate the size of the shelves so that all
her books can be placed in it.
(b) Mr Lal wants to know how many pairs of shoes can he place in
a cubical box. He used visual estimation to do it.
(c) Shreya wants to gift a teddy bear to her sister on her birthday. To
surprise her, she decided to pack the gift in a box. Here, she has to
estimate the size of the box so that it can completely fit the teddy
bear.
Try This
Some boxes of shoes are placed on a shelf. Use visual
estimation to decide how many more boxes can be placed?
Example 3: The diagram shows some geometry boxes placed in a box.
Can you find out how many more can be placed in the box
to completely fill it?
Solution: Through visual estimation we can see that 10 books can be
placed in a column. So, we can still place 24 books more
in the box.
