(f) There are 98 dresses. If there are 666 polka dots on each dress, about how
many polka dots are there on all the dresses?
                                 (i) 70,000 polka dots (ii) 65,000 polka dots

                              Values and Life Skills

                      1. A birdseller has 113 cages. There are 21 birds in each cage. How many birds are
there in all? Is it right to cage birds?

                      2. A car parking area has 4 fl oors. On each fl oor 56 cars can be parked. At 1:00 p.m.,
there are 182 cars in the parking area. How many empty parking spaces are there?
Why is parking prohibited near schools and hospitals?

                      ACTIVITY

                         What To Do?

To make a geoboard and find the products using it

                         What We Need?

A thick square thermocol sheet of 15” × 15”, ruler, pencil, glue, colourful push pins or
                         thumbpins and wool
                         How To Do?
 Place the thermocol sheet on a fl at surface

and draw 15 horizontal and 15 vertical
lines on it at equal distances to form a grid.
You can paste a squared sheet of paper
instead of drawing lines if you wish to.
 Push the pins partially at every point where

the lines meet. Your geoboard is ready. You
can even glue them. Observe that it is very
similar to a multiplication grid. Now you
can find the product of the given numbers
                               using wool on the geoboard.
Let’s fi nd the product of 3 and 6 on the geoboard. To do so, tie the
wool to any one pin and take it around 3 pins horizontally and
6 pins vertically to form a rectangle. Count the number of pins in the
                         rectangle to get the product.
                         So, 3 × 6 = 18.

Now, fi nd the product of the given numbers using your geoboard.
                         (a) 12 × 13 (b) 9 × 8 (c) 15 × 10 (d) 11 × 14

                                                                                                                         53
