Measuring Weight

We weigh a thing to know how heavy or light it is.

                                                                 Recall
Tick () the box next to the animal(s) on the heavier side.

                         (a) (b)

                         (c) (d)

                    Measuring Weight Using Non-Standard Units

We can use diff erent non-standard things to know how heavy or light an object
is. These things can be stones, pebbles, marbles, spoons, etc. For example, we
can weigh an apple using spoons of the same size.

You must have seen the weighing balance which the local vegetable or fruit
sellers use to weigh things. It has two pans. The pans balance when the

weights in the two pans are equal. When the weights in two pans are not
equal, the pan with heavier object moves down and the pan with lighter
                    object moves up.

The weights are equal. The weights are not equal.
