Measuring Length Using Non-Standard Units
We can measure the lengths of diff erent objects using non-standard things.
These can be paper clips, s cks or toothpicks.
Let’s understand this with the help of Brainwork
an example. We will measure the If one fi nger is measured using two
length of a pencil using paper clips. paper clips, how many paper clips
are needed to measure eight fi ngers?
• Take a pencil.
• Put the paper clips along the
length of the pencil as shown.
• Find out the number of paper clips needed to measure the length of the
pencil.
We can see that fi ve paper clips are needed to measure the length of the pencil.
Therefore, the length of pencil = total length of 5 paper clips.
The number of paper clips used to measure the length can be diff erent for
diff erent pencils according to their length.
Similarly, we can measure various objects using non-standard things such as
ice cream s cks, matchs cks and toothpicks.
1. Measure the lengths of the following objects using paper clips, ice
cream s cks and toothpicks.
