Let’s learn how to use a weighing balance and machine
to measure the mass of an object. You must have seen
vegetable vendors weighing vegetables and fruits in the
market. They usually have a weighing balance with two
plates. On one plate they add the vegetables and on the
other plate, they put the weights to balance both. This is
how they weigh.
In the other type of weighing balance, the vendors hang
the balance by holding the rope of the balance which is
attached in the middle of the rod in their hands, and then
they put vegetables on one plate and weights on the other
plate to measure.
In case of a weighing machine, it is necessary to adjust the needle of the machine on
zero before placing any object to measure. Then the object is placed on the plate to see
where the needle stops, that would be the weight of your object.
In our everyday life, we weigh fruits and vegetables before buying, we sell and buy many
things after weighing, and we also weigh ourselves.
TIME TO REVISE
Tick () the correct one.
1. Heavy objects are measured in terms of (kilograms/grams).
2. Millimetre is (bigger/smaller) than centimetre.
3. Metre is (bigger/smaller) than centimetre.
Measurement of Capacity
Capacity is the amount of liquid a container can hold. The
commonly used units for measuring capacity of any liquid
are litre (L) and millilitre (mL). The smaller the container,
the lesser will be its capacity to hold the liquid. We use
glasswares like measuring cylinder and measuring beaker
to measure the volume of liquids.
These measuring cylinders and beakers come in various

capacities. The measuring containers are divided into cylinder beaker
