Points to remember
• As proper fractions do not have a whole part, therefore while writing them in the decimal notation,
zero is written to the left of the decimal point.
• If a decimal place does not have a digit, then zero is written in its place.
Try These
1. Write the decimal notation for : (a) 4 (b) 2 1
2. How will you read 56.453? 5 2
3. A decimal number is read as thirty-five point zero zero four. Write its decimal notation.
4. A decimal number is composed of 43 ones and 7 thousandths. Write its decimal notation.
Like and Unlike Decimals
Maths Info
If two decimals have an equal number of decimal places, then they
are known as like decimals, otherwise, they are unlike decimals. For The value of a decimal number
does not change on adding
example, 101.21, 62.12 and 7.89 are like decimals, whereas 10.32, zeros to the extreme right of the
611.5 and 9.153 are unlike decimals. fractional part of the number.
Equivalent Decimals
Two decimals are equivalent if both of them are equal to the same fraction. For example, 52.9 and
529
52.90 are equivalent decimals because both of them are equal to the fraction . Similarly, 25.21
and 25.210 are equivalent decimals. 10
Representation of Decimals on a Number Line
If a line segment between any two consecutive integers on the number line is divided into:
• 10 equal segments, then each smaller segment represents a tenth.
• 100 equal segments, then each smaller segment represents a hundredth.
• 1,000 equal segments, then each smaller segment represents a thousandth.
