Mixed fractions Maths Info
A fraction consisting a whole number and a
proper fraction is known as a mixed fraction. • If the numerator and denominator of a fraction are equal,
then the value of the fraction is 1 (unity).
6 1 10
For example, 5 , 3 and 12 are mixed • In a mixed fraction, the whole number is known as the whole
fractions. 7 9 11 part and the proper fraction is known as the fractional part.
Equivalent fractions
The fractions representing the same value are known as equivalent fractions. For example,
1 24 5 are equivalent fractions as they are equal in value.
, , and
2 4 8 10
= = =
1 2 4 5
2 4 8 10
To get an equivalent fraction, multiply or divide the numerator and denominator of a fraction by
the same positive number.
2 4
Example 5: Fill in the boxes, and , in = = .
15 45
2 2 × 2 4 2 2 6 Maths Info
Solution: Since = = and = =
15 15 × 2 30 15 15 × 3 45 Two fractions a and x are
2 4 6 b y
Thus, = = equivalent if ay = bx.
15 30 45
Alternatively,

= ⇒ 2 × = 4 × 5 = ⇒ 2 × 45 = × 15
15 15 45
4 × 15 2 × 45
⇒ = = 30 ⇒ = = 6

Example 6: Write an equivalent fraction of in which the:
5
(a) numerator is 9 (b) denominator is 20
3
Solution: (a) To get the equivalent fraction with the numerator 9, multiply each term of by 3.
3 3×3 = 9 5
5 = 5×3 15
Thus, the required equivalent fraction is 9 .
15
3
(b) To get the equivalent fraction with the denominator 20, multiply each term of
by 4. 5
3 = 3×4 = 12
5 5×4 20
Thus, the required equivalent fraction is 12 .
