NUMBERS
Integrated with Science (Astronomy)
An Astronomical Unit (AU) represents the average distance between the Sun
and Earth, which is about 150,000,000 kilometres. Astronomical units are
usually used to measure distances within our Solar System. For example,
the planet Mars is about 1.5 AU from the Sun.
Find the distance between the Sun and Mars in kilometres.
NATURAL NUMBERS AND WHOLE NUMBERS
Integrated with English
English is an international language which allows people from different countries to communicate for
different needs. Mathematics is also a language which is used for communication and for describing
different situations in everyday life.
Prepare an oral presentation explaining the properties of whole numbers to your classmates.
NEGATIVE NUMBERS AND INTEGERS
Integrated with Physics
A thermometer is a device which is used to measure temperatures. Temperatures
below 0°C are represented by negative numbers and temperatures above 0°C are
represented by positive numbers.
What temperatures do the given thermometers show?
PLAYING WITH NUMBERS
Integrated with Chemistry
In chemistry, the concept of LCM is used to write the chemical formulas. For example, the chemical
formula for aluminum sulfide is Al S . Let us see how the concept of LCM works to write the chemical
2 3
formula for aluminum sulfide.
2–
3+
An aluminum ion (Al ) has 3 positive charges and a sulfide ion (S ) has 2 negative charges. The
LCM of 3 and 2 is 6.
Since 6 ÷ 3 = 2, two aluminum ions will form a compound of aluminum sulfide.
Since 6 ÷ 2 = 3, three sulfide ions will form a compound of aluminum sulfide.
Thus, the chemical formula for aluminum sulfide is Al S .
2 3
Now using the concept of LCM, write the chemical formula for sodium chloride (common salt) given
1+
1–
that a sodium ion (Na ) has 1 positive charge and a chloride ion (Cl ) has 1 negative charge.
FRACTIONS
Integrated with Arts
1
The given figure is composed of 24 identical triangles. Colour of the
3
triangles red and colour the remaining triangles using different colours of
your choice to make an interesting art piece.
