                                                          Preface

Mathematics is a challenging and rewarding subject that needs to be learnt and taught with
the right approach. It is observed that a large section of students consider mathematics to
be a diffi cult and monotonous subject but when approached through understanding and
clarity of thought, it becomes an easy and interesting subject.

ICSE Mathematics is a sincere eff ort to meet the expectations of the students and teachers.
It aims to help the students gain knowledge of terms, concepts, symbols and methods and
apply them while solving the exercises. Th e books conform to the latest curriculum of the
Council for the Indian School Certifi cate Examinations (CISCE).All the concepts given in
the books have been clearly explained with the help of examples. Th e chapters contain various
in-text exercises covering all the concepts taught followed by review exercises and progress
worksheets. A variety of activities are given to strengthen the knowledge of concepts learnt by

the students. Questions based on values and life skills are provided at the end of the chapters.
                    Note to the Teachers
                      • Number operations can be well-linked and reinforced through day-to-day situations.

For example, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division can be applied in
                          various situations in everyday life.
                      • Similarly, the concepts of measurement, time and money can be taught by relating

                      • Geometrical concepts can be introduced using objects of diff erent shapes and through
                          other practical activities.

                      • Th e concept of patterns can be taught through various activities.
                      • Students can be asked to collect data from various sources to help them learn data
                          handling.

                      • Use in-text exercises given aft er a few concept within the chapter as a tool to guage the
understanding of the concepts learnt by the students before attempting to move to a
                          new concept.
                      • Important points and information related to concepts are provided in Top Tip(s) and

                          Remember boxes.
                      • Questions to boost mental activities are provided within the chapters as mental maths.

                      • Attempt and Score: An assessment tool to assess the overall knowledge of the students.
                      • Integrate Your Learning: A correlation-based approach to help students create links
                          between diff erent subjects.

                      • Th e books will help the students to enhance their Mathematical skills through regular
practice thus strengthening the foundation of the subject at an early age.
A feedback for further improvement of the books will be highly appreciated.
