Reading the Minute Hand
Remember
There are 60 markings on a clock face. Each marking is for When the minute
one minute. The big markings are with numbers. There hand is at 12, it means 00
are four small markings at equal distance between the minutes.
two big markings.
The minute hand is faster than the hour hand. While the hour hand moves from one
number to the other in one hour, the minute hand takes one full circle of the clock face in
the same time. So, 1 hour = 60 minutes.
When the minute hand is at a big marking, we calculate the minutes by multiplying the
number at the bigger marking by 5. For example, if the minute hand is at 3, it means
3 × 5 = 15 minutes.
Look at the given examples.
Example 1: Write the time shown in the clock.
Solution: The minute hand is at 3 and the hour hand has just
passed 11.
3 × 5 = 15 minutes
So, the time is 11:15 or quarter past 11.
Example 2: Write the time shown in the clock.
Solution: The minute hand is at 6 and the hour hand has passed
2 and is about to reach 3.
6 × 5 = 30 minutes
So, the time is 2:30 or half past 2.
Another way of reading time is to count backwards from 12 to the mark where the minute
hand is. Then multiply the number of marks counted backwards by 5. Look at the given
example.
The minute hand is at 10 and the hour hand has passed 5 and is
about to reach 6.
We can write 10 × 5 = 50 minutes, if counted forward or 2 × 5 = 10
minutes, if counted backwards.
So, the time is 5:50 or 50 minutes past 5 or 10 minutes to 6.
Seconds
Seconds is another unit used to measure time. It is lesser than a
minute. There are 60 seconds in one minute.
1 minute = 60 seconds Second hand
